Description

The gas column located at the south end of Houndwell Park was originally erected in 1829 in another part of Southampton to commemorate the introduction of gas lighting in the town by W Chamberlayne, M.P., in 1822. This column features a lion and is a replica of one of the original gas street lamp columns. It has a stepped base, a plinth with an inscription, and a tapering fluted Doric column topped with an urn and a spherical container that has a slender finial.
