Description
A pair of semi-detached houses, numbers 39 and 41, with number 41 now serving as a chiropractic surgery and flat above, were built in 1845 according to deeds, with 20th-century additions. The houses are stuccoed over brickwork and have a Welsh slate roof. The design is two storeys and three bays, with lower, set-back side bays and an added lower bay to each end; a rear range was added in 1923. A narrow vertical recess divides the properties. The windows are sash windows with glazing bars, set in raised surrounds, with the ends of the cills breaking forward on brackets. Entrances are at either end, with internal porches supported by pilasters and entablatures, and narrow round-arched openings in the return walls – the one at number 41 features Art Nouveau glazing. Inside the porch of number 41 are two steps leading to a door of four flush panels with an overlight containing glazing bars; the porch of number 39 has a black and white marbled floor. The hipped roof overhangs, with a central brick cross-ridge stack. The side wings each have a sash window on each floor, with 12 panes to the ground floor and nine unequally-hung panes to the first floor. These wings have hipped ends and brick stacks to the rear. Additions to either side feature monopitched roofs; the left one is blind, while the right one has a 20th-century first-floor oculus.
The interior of number 39 includes a panelled double door between the front and rear ground-floor rooms, and an open-string staircase with moulding below the treads, a decorative newel, and curtail to the handrail.
