Description
A pair of semi-detached houses, built around 1840, with minor alterations in the late 20th century. The houses are constructed of stock brick with painted dressings and a painted roughcast finish to the central portion. They have a Welsh slated roof with a ridge stack containing eight flues in a line. The roof features plain barge boards and verge and eaves soffits. The front elevation is characterized by a wide gable to the street, with recessed entrance bays on each side.
The houses are two storeys and have attics, with a two-storey lean-to bay extending from the front and rear, each with shallow parapets. They have stacked sash windows with glazing bars, arranged as 6 over 6 panes, without horns. The sashes are set beneath painted wedge lintels and have bracketed cills. A single blind window opening is located at the gable apex. The side entrance bays also have matching sash windows above the doorways. Number 3 retains its original door surround, featuring a shallow bracketed hood, and a 5-panel door with a rectangular overlight above. Number 5 has an altered door surround and a 20th-century glazed door with an overlight. The interiors were not inspected.
These houses are part of a series of paired houses, creating a notable presence on the east side of Hill Street and they form a group with numbers 7 and 11, number 13, and numbers 15 and 17.
