Description

A pair of semi-detached houses dating from circa 1840, with minor alterations and extensions in the 20th century. The houses are built of yellow stock brick with painted dressings, shallow barge boards, and eaves and verge soffits. They have a Welsh slated roof with a long ridge stack containing eight flues in line. They are set back from the street with a gable plan and slightly recessed entrance bays on each side.

The front (west) elevation is two storeys and attics, with stacked glazing bar windows, without horns and with margin lights, on either side. The windows have painted wedge lintels and bracketed cills. There is a blind window opening in the gable apex. Two-storey lean-to entrance bays have shallow parapets to the front and rear, a sash window above an open porch, and recessed doorways. The porch to number 15 has a painted surround and a shallow cornice, while the porch to number 17 has been altered. The side wall of number 17 has a lined-out render coat.

The interior has not been inspected. The houses are part of a series of paired houses of an unusual plan form, creating a notable presence on the east side of Hill Street. They form a group with numbers 5 and 7, 7 and 11, and 13.
