Description
Foxhill House is a large house set in a landscaped area, currently used as a student hall of residence. It was designed by Alfred Waterhouse in 1868 for his own use. The building is constructed of red brick with a diaper pattern and features extensive cut brick moulding. The roof is made of plain and fish scale tiles, adorned with cresting, and has irregular large chimneys with offset heads. There is one gabled semi-dormer to the right of center and one half-hipped semi-dormer to the left of center, all in the High Victorian Gothic style.
The house has two storeys and attics, with irregular fenestration consisting of all sash windows without glazing bars. The entrance front showcases three gable projections: one to the left, which is also gabled on re-entry, one center-right, and one central gable with a stained and traceried window leading to the staircase. To the right of the staircase projection is an enclosed gabled entrance porch with buttresses and a moulded arch.
The garden front mirrors this style, featuring a gable to the left, a four-bay lean-to verandah, and a large conservatory to the right. Inside, the entrance hall contains a three-flight staircase with arched balusters, carved panels, and a moulded handrail, along with a stained glass stair window. There is a large hooded fireplace supported by clustered columns with carved capitals in the hall. The attic stairs feature an elaborate balustrade and an arcade leading to the landing. The principal ground floor rooms are panelled and include chimneypieces, while a panelled first-floor chamber has a coved ceiling. Additionally, there is a billiard room with a lantern light and a glazed conservatory.
