Description

The Statue of George Palmer, located in Palmer Park, was created in 1891 by sculptor George Blackall Simmonds. This bronze statue depicts George Palmer, the founder of Huntley and Palmer's biscuit empire, holding his silk hat and umbrella in his right hand while grasping his lapel with his left. It stands on a tall pink granite plinth that features a moulded base and cornice. The statue was funded by public subscription and was originally unveiled on November 4, 1891, in Broad Street. In 1930, it was moved to its current location in Palmer Park, which was also donated to Reading by Palmer. This statue is noted for its unusual design.
