Description

This is a house, later converted into three flats, built in 1913. It is located on Grove Road South, Southsea, Portsmouth. The house is constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a timber frame and stucco panels. It has steep, pitched plain tile roofs and clustered brick stacks on both the left and right sides.

The front facade, facing "The Retreat," has three bays. A projecting timber porch, open at the front and supported by moulded timber, is located on the right side of the first bay. There are mullioned and transomed casement windows with leaded lights and coloured glass on both left and right returns. A recessed half-glazed door, featuring two moulded lower panels and glazed leaded lights above, is positioned behind the porch.

The first-floor level juts out, with a weatherboarded gable, a spike finial, and a five-light wide mullioned and transomed casement window with leaded lights and coloured glass over the transom. Similar two-light casements are set under the eaves on the left and right returns. To the left of the porch, a recessed bay contains a two-light mullion and double-transomed casement, with opening lights below the lower transom and leaded lights with coloured glass above the top transom, all set within a gauged brick flat arch. A terracotta band is present at sill and head level. A four-pane casement is located above this feature, also set under a gauged brick flat arch. To the right of the porch, a narrow mullioned fixed casement is followed by a two-light mullion and transomed casement with leaded lights and coloured glass over the transom. A small two-light casement sits under the eaves.

A recessed tripartite canted bay is further to the right, featuring a four-light wide mullioned and double-transomed casement and flanking two-light wide casements with leaded lights and coloured glass over the top transom. The jettied first floor above this bay has a facing gable, half-timbered with arched braces and stuccoed panels, a spike finial, and a four-light wide mullioned and transomed casement with leaded glass above the transom, set under a pedimental-shaped flat timber lintel.

The return facing Grove Road South has a two-leaf half-glazed French casement with side screens on the left, and a tripartite canted bay similar to the main facade. The first floor of this return has a half-timbered facing gable with stuccoed panels. Above the gable is a facing half-timbered gable with six small six-pane casements set under a deep timber lintel with a round-headed soffit inset over each casement. The interior of the building has not been inspected.
