Description
The Trafalgar Monument is a memorial located on Clarence Esplanade in Southsea, Portsmouth. It features an anchor from HMS Victory, a ship that was laid down in 1759 and launched in 1765. The anchor is set on a battered granite stone plinth with two granite stepped bases. The inscription on the monument states, "The Victory's Anchor Oct. 21st 1805." Additional inscriptions detail the Battle of Trafalgar, noting that the British fleet consisted of 27 ships of the line, while the allied French and Spanish fleet had 33, of which 19 were captured or destroyed by Lord Nelson. Another inscription commemorates Admiral Lord Nelson, stating that he embarked for the last time near this memorial on September 14, 1805, and was killed at the Battle of Trafalgar on October 21, 1805.
