Description
The Aboukir Memorial is a monument located on Clarence Esplanade in Southsea, Portsmouth. It was built around 1875 and restored in 1984 by Baker of Southsea. The memorial is made of ashlar stone and features a four-sided obelisk on a stepped base. The inscriptions commemorate the officers and men of H.M.S. Aboukir who died during a yellow fever epidemic in Jamaica between 1873 and 1874, and it was erected by Commodore A.F.R. De Horsey and the crew. A bronze plaque notes that the restoration in 1984 was carried out by the descendants of Mr A.E. Thomas and Mrs E.E. Thomas.
