Description
The Peel or Shannon Naval Brigade Monument is a memorial located on Clarence Esplanade in Southsea, Portsmouth, built in 1860. It is made of granite and stone and features a four-sided tapering pier with polished pink granite panels framed by white granite supports. The monument has a cornice adorned with shell ornamentation on the frieze, topped with an elaborate bronze finial. This finial was cast from the metal of a gun captured at Lucknow and was presented to Shannon's Brigade by General Lord Clyde, the Commander-in-Chief of the army.
The monument stands on a stepped stone plinth, with cannon bollards at each corner. It was erected by the Officers and Crew of HMS Shannon in memory of Captain Sir William Peel, Captain Thomas Gray, Mr. M.P. Gavuey, Mr. M.A. Daniel, and the seamen and marines of Shannon's Naval Brigade who lost their lives while serving in the North-West Provinces of India during the mutiny of 1857-58.
