Description
The Indian Mutiny Perthshire Volunteers Monument is a memorial built around 1869, located on Pembroke Road in Portsmouth. This marble obelisk stands on a plinth and is surrounded by a granite curb at its base, which is filled with earth and planted. The monument honors the members of the 90th Light Infantry Perthshire Volunteers who were killed during the Indian Mutiny of 1857 or who died in India between 1859 and 1869. The inscription commemorates the officers and 312 non-commissioned officers, buglers, and privates who fell during the mutiny, particularly in the defense, relief, and capture of Lucknow, as well as in subsequent operations until the end of the war in 1859. It also pays tribute to other officers who died while serving with the 90th Light Infantry in India from the end of the war until 1869.
