Description
No. 1 Penny Street is a late 18th-century building that has been restored in the late 20th century. It was originally two houses but is now one. The exterior features grey brick in header bond with red brick dressings, and it has a pair of plain tiled hipped roofs. There are brick stacks at the rear left and rear right. The building is three storeys high and has five bays.
At the centre, there is a six-fielded panel door with moulded panelled reveals and soffit, an eared architrave, and recessed pilasters, topped with a pediment on console brackets. To the left and right of the door are two 20th-century restored sash windows, while the first and second floors each have six original 12-pane sashes, all set under gauged red brick flat arches. A stone-coped parapet sits above the second floor. There is a similar door on the right, which has a projecting cornice above it, and each door has one stone step leading up to it.
Inside, the building features an open string staircase with a moulded handrail, fielded panelling with a date in one ground floor room, and a restored original fireplace.
