Description

Wyvern Nursery is a nursery school that was originally constructed as an elementary school for boys in 1896, with some 20th-century alterations. The building is made of red brick in Flemish bond and features hipped and gabled slate roofs adorned with ornamental tile ridges and terracotta finials on the gables.

The layout consists of parallel, single-storey classroom blocks divided by a central corridor. The main façade faces Church Street to the north and presents a symmetrical 14-bay elevation with segmental-headed windows. The end bays are recessed, and the elevation is enhanced by three pairs of windows at the center and to the left and right of the center, all under pedimented gables. The gables frame a terracotta plaque in the center that reads "BOYS SCHOOL" in capital letters, with the outer gables dated 1896. There are segmental-headed doors on the side elevations. The rear block is slightly taller than the front block and has a 12-bay elevation facing the playground, articulated similarly to the front.

Inside, there is a central corridor with wide arched openings in the brick interior walls leading to classrooms that run parallel on each side, featuring tall exterior windows and herringbone wood floors.

The school was built by the London and North-Eastern Railway Company, with assistance from the Radcliffe Trust and contributions from local townspeople who subscribed to a voluntary rate. It serves as an important testament to the railway company's commitment to the families of its employees. The building has group value with Wyvern First School.
