Description
Wyvern First School, originally a combined elementary school for infants and girls, was built in 1906 for the Bucks County Education Committee. Architects were Messrs Harrington, Ley and Kerkham of London, with E. Archer of Northampton acting as general contractor. The building is constructed with fireproof brick and concrete floors, featuring Heather brick facings in English bond and extensive Bath stone dressings. The roofs are slate, with ribbed lead ogee roofs to the stair turrets, and painted wood louvres.
The school is arranged in a U-shaped plan, with classrooms surrounding a central hall on the ground and first floors, accessed by stairs. Stairways and cloakrooms are located in each wing of the U.
The main front, facing Aylesbury Street to the north, is set back from the street behind railings. A central block projects forward, displaying four stone-coped gables above large Venetian windows, which are flanked by groups of three tall windows on the ground floor. The windows have stone key-blocked heads. The side wings have open Tuscan-columned stone porches with friezes bearing the words "INFANTS" in raised capitals. The first floor of the wings feature tall windows with semi-circular stone dormer heads. The exterior displays pilaster buttresses of alternating stone and brick, and alternating bands of stone and red brick to the first floor. Painted wood louvres are situated along the ridge of the central block and wings, which have ogee lead roofs. Cast-iron rainwater heads feature a ying-yang motif. The rear elevation, originally used as the entrance point for the girls’ school on the first floor, has pairs of full-height projecting stair turrets on either side of the central section, terminating above the eaves level with ribbed lead ogee roofs.
The interior features wood block and terrazzo floors, glazed brick dados, and wrought iron trusses in the upper hall. Internal windows provide light from the hall to the classrooms. Original fittings are retained in the cloakrooms.
