Description
The Old Post House is a house dating from the 17th century, with additions from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of coursed rubble with old tile roofs. The north range, which presents a gable end to the road, is two storeys and an attic, and has a two-storey wing extending to the west and a right-angle two-storey wing fronting the road. The original 17th-century section has three bays. The north front features a large 17th-century lateral stack to the east bay, a modern glazed door in the centre bay, and a two-light casement in the west bay. There are two two-light casements to the first floor and two 18th-century gabled dormers. Gable ends have copings and kneelers. The 18th-century west addition has one upper casement window. The gable elevation of the 17th-century block facing the road has a tripartite sash window on the ground floor, a sash window above, and a stone mullioned attic casement. A 19th-century two-storey range of two bays, with sash windows, has a carriageway leading into the yard. The interior has 17th-century moulded stone fireplaces in the front rooms on both the ground and first floors. The rear room has a large inglenook with panelled seats, one containing a carved panel. A 17th-century oak cupboard is set into an outer wall. The staircase has heavy turned balusters, a moulded rail, and square newels with moulded caps.
