Description

The Church of St. Mary is a parish church located on the east side of Newport Road in Woughton on the Green. It dates from the 13th, 14th, and 15th centuries and was restored in the 19th century. The church is built of coursed limestone and features lead and slate roofs, with tiles on the chancel and south porch. The west tower, which is embattled, dates from the 15th century and consists of three stages. The nave and aisle are from the 13th and 14th centuries, while the porch is a 19th-century addition. The chancel has been restored and includes traceried windows, with a 19th-century east window and a 14th-century south doorway.

Inside, there is a single arcade of four bays supported by piers with clustered shafts and plain moulded capitals. The chancel arch is plain, and there is an ogee-headed tomb recess with a recumbent effigy, likely from the 14th century. The south aisle contains the rood stairs, which have upper and lower doors, the latter featuring carved decoration above. There is also a 14th-century piscina and a tub-shaped font from the 13th century. A monument on the south chancel wall commemorates Martha James, who died in 1746, and features a panel with flanking Corinthian pilasters, side scrolls, a cornice broken forward over the pilasters, and a segmental pediment with a central urn. The apron includes scrolls with a cartouche of arms supported by a cherub's head.
