Description
The Rustic Bridge is an ornamental bridge built in the mid-18th century. It is part of a series of garden features created for Sir Robert Throckmorton of Weston Park by Mr. John Huggins, intended to maintain a piece of water in the park. The bridge is constructed of coursed stone rubble and features a round-headed arch with long embankments on either side, allowing a path to cross over a brook. This bridge was a favorite spot of the poet William Cowper, who lived nearby at Cowper's house from 1786 to 1795. It is illustrated in "Cowper," printed by J. Swan in 1803, and in "The Loved Haunts of Cowper," published by Thomas Wright in London in 1894.
