Description
A large timber-framed building of likely 15th-century or earlier origin, with the front portion constructed in 1495. Originally a Chantry House, it features cross wings and was divided into cottages on the south side during the 16th and 17th centuries. A two-story office addition of circa 1920-30 is present at the road end. The building has brick and stuccoed nogging, with steep gable-end tiled and corrugated roofs. The first floor of the cross wings is slightly jettied, and many windows are later replacements or blocked. Internally, the roof structure is exposed on the first floor, featuring a seven-bay roof with butt purlin, arched brace tie beams, and crown posts in some cases. It also has hammer head wall posts, one truss with a modified hammer beam, and later wind braces. The north cross wing has a three-bay roof with a cross bay, incorporating wind braces and arched-brace collar trusses. The south cross wing retains some original window frames.
