Description
No. 89 High Street is a house with shops that dates from the mid to late 16th century and has undergone significant alterations and re-facing. The building is timber framed, with the front being tile-hung, and features a Kent tile roof with two hipped dormers. The front elevation is two storeys high and has a regular two-window range. The tile-hanging includes some darker tiles that create decorative bands. The windows are 12-pane hornless sash windows, and there is a late 20th century shop front designed in an early Victorian style. Inside, the layout has been too altered to clearly reconstruct, but it likely had a two-room depth with a rear wing. Notable interior features include a 4-centred arched timber doorway adorned with oak-leaf carving in the spandrels (though not in its original position) and joists with roll mouldings, which suggest a mid to late 16th century date. Many of the ceiling beams have been replaced with new brick piers.
