Description
Nos 78 and 80 High Street are two houses that have been converted into shops. They were built in the late 18th century and are part of a range that includes No 82. The buildings are constructed of brick with some early fine pointing and feature a Kent tile mansard roof. They stand three storeys tall with a dormered attic and have a large brick ridge stack. Each unit has a lateral entrance hall and stairs, along with three-storeyed rear wings.
The front of each house has two windows on the upper floors, all of which are 6-pane hornless sashes. There is a parapet and a brick cornice, along with flat-roofed dormers that contain 2-light casement windows. The shop fronts are in a style typical of around 1900, featuring plate glass. At the rear, there are some sash windows and two 2-light casements with leaded lights on No 80.
It is important to note that the front range is part of a single-phase development that includes No 82, which is separately listed due to its internal features that belong to the medieval house known as Philip Lodge located at the rear. The front elevation of Nos 78 and 80 should be considered in conjunction with No 82.
