Description
This is a barn located 30 yards south-west of the Manor House, dating from around 1300. It is constructed with a timber frame on a high flint plinth and is weather-boarded, topped with a plain tiled hipped roof. The east side features small skylights, while the south end has an inset wagon entrance with double boarded doors and a cart enclosure.
Inside, the barn consists of 14 bays, with aisles on both sides and at the ends. The structure includes arcade posts resting on cills, with long curved shores overlapping the aisle ties to the arcade posts. The wall cills are positioned higher than the arcade cills. The wall plate has a reversed assembly on the outer walls, with two outer posts in each bay pegged closely together. The arcade posts are supported by long curved braces connecting to the arcade plates and tie-beams, along with vertical and horizontal blocking pieces. The roof features a plain crown-post and collar-purlin design, with two long curved braces extending downward and two upward braces. The collars are morticed and tenoned, and the arcade plates have finely-cut scarf joints secured with four face pegs and a key.
