Description
Priors Gate is a significant gate into the cathedral and priory precincts in Rochester, likely built around 1344 when this section of wall was constructed. The gate is made of random rubble ragstone and stands two storeys tall, featuring a northwest stair turret. It has a parapet with a moulded string course that has eroded over time. The arches consist of two orders, with the lower order being four-centred and the upper order, which has a hood mould, being segmental. The jambs are chamfered with pyramid stops. Inside, the vault has ribs that feature chamfer and roll moulding, along with eroded corbels. There is an original cusped lancet window on the south side and a renewed two-light Decorated window on the north side. The doorway to the turret rises significantly above the gateway parapet.
