Description
Garth House is a former choir school, now used as cathedral offices, dating from the 1870s. It is constructed of red brick with sandstone dressings and has a tiled gable-end roof with stone coping. The building features a hall that forms the upper floor of a two-storey range aligned north to south, positioned end-on to the street.
On the west side elevation, there are two gabled, two-light windows in the Decorated style on the first floor, flanking a central external stack that has two brick shafts and a stone band with an inscription. This stack widens at ground floor level to frame a small two-light gabled window, while the ground floor has 20th-century casements. The street front showcases a large three-light Decorated-style window and four trefoil-headed lancets on the ground floor. The entrance is located to the right and features a later shallow porch that is flush with the south face of the hall range, which includes a simple pointed doorway and stands forward of the wall plane of Cloister House, to which it is attached.
At the rear, there is a three-light window to the hall and lancets leading to an angle stair turret. Inside, the hall has been divided into offices with a false ceiling in parts, but the good hammer-beam roof remains intact. This building also overbuilds and backs onto parts of the south range of the cloister (refectory) of the cathedral.
