Description
East Moor Street Cottages is a house, now divided into two, dating from the mid to late 15th century, with alterations in the 16th century and a rear extension added in the early 20th century. The building features a timber frame that is partly covered in brick, with weatherboarding, brick ridge stacks, and a hipped tiled roof that includes small gablets and a rear catslide. The plan follows a Wealden layout, with an 18th-century continuous rear outshut and a 20th-century wing to the east.
The exterior is two storeys high and has a three-window range. The left section is brick, while the center and right are weatherboarded. There is a central recessed entrance with a 20th-century door, and three-light 20th-century casements, two of which are located to the left of the entrance. The end returns also feature 20th-century windows. At the rear, there are two large hipped dormers from the mid-20th century above the stairs, with single casements, and a full-width continuous outshut, along with an east gabled wing that has a lateral 20th-century stack.
Inside, the central hall is divided by a late 16th or early 17th-century axial moulded beam, and there is a large lateral fireplace in the rear wall of the right-hand room. A dogleg stair extends back from the central room. Historically, the building was likely a Wealden-type house with a jettied front and a recessed middle bay, featuring a central open hall that was floored, with the left-hand ridge stack inserted in the 16th century, and the front refronted and the jetty underbuilt in the 20th century.
