Description
Chapel House, now divided into two dwellings, dates from the mid-to-late 15th century and was altered in the early-to-mid 16th century, with further changes made in the early 20th century. The house is timber-framed, with rendered rear and weatherboarded sections, and features a large brick external stack on the right-hand side, a rear left-hand gable stack, and a rear central external stack. The roof is tiled with a hipped cross range and a left-hand hipped section. The plan is a 3-room parallel configuration, with a rear outshut to the right-hand side of No.1.
The two-storey main building, with an attic and basement, has a nine-window front. The front elevation features close-studded timbering with a continuous jettied first floor in three sections, the left-hand section projecting with a hipped roof front and rear, and a jettied return. Most windows are late 16th century, with some clerestory windows which are blocked on the first floor. Many are 19th-century casements; the right-hand and left-hand sides of the middle section have ground-floor 3-light transom and mullion windows with small flanking lights, with a 20th-century window above. The left-hand one-window range has 19th-century cross windows, and a curved brace with a moulded base to the corner post. A large right-hand stack is set back towards the front and connects to the ridge section of the roof. The rear features a plain 20th-century door, with 20th-century windows above and to the side of the outshut. The left-hand return is weatherboarded to the upper floor, with 20th-century windows, and a rear 20th-century extension with a gable stack and a 20th-century door. The rear also has a central single-storey gable with a stack, and a shallow raking dormer to the attic. The interior was not inspected.
