Description
The Carisbrooke War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, which also includes inscriptions and names from the Second World War and the Malayan Emergency. It is made of limestone and features a memorial cross along with an additional stone tablet and metal plaque.
The memorial consists of a Celtic cross that rises from a plinth on a square base. The front face of the cross has a recessed panel with the inscription: "ERECTED TO THE MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919/ (NAMES)/ “THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE.” This same inscription is also found on a recessed panel on the rear face of the plinth, which lists the names of those who served in the First World War. On the west face of the plinth, there is a small metal plaque that reads: "TO THE PEOPLE/ OF CARISBROOKE/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE WAR 1939-1945/ WE WILL REMEMBER THEM." The east face of the plinth features a square stone tablet inscribed with "1939 – 1945/ (NAMES)/ MALAYA/ 1948 – 1959/ (NAME)/ 1914 – 1919/ (NAME)."
