Description
Northwells is originally a house, most recently used as a school. The original part of the building dates to 1796 and is a Gothick villa, extended to the right in the mid-19th century, with a 20th-century classroom extension to the right, which is not of special interest. The building is stuccoed with a tiled roof. It is two storeys and has attics, with five windows across the front, featuring irregular window placement. The left side of the 1796 portion has two thin, octagonal turrets. Pointed Gothick windows are set within a gable, with bands and a hood moulding above the first-floor window. A crenellated parapet runs along the right side, incorporating 20th-century windows. The left side has a lancet window and the ground floor features a four-light splayed bay with a crenellated top and Gothick glazing, with modified ogee heads and quatrefoils, incorporating stained glass. A recessed, arched doorcase is centrally positioned. The original portion ends with three diagonally placed stuccoed chimneys, to which the mid-19th-century extension is built. This extension has two gables with kneelers, separated by an external chimney stack, and features two-over-three casement or sash windows. The left side elevation has three gabled dormers with Gothick windows and clustered, stuccoed diagonal chimney stacks. Inside, a staircase from 1796 is slightly curved, with two turned balusters to each step and a mahogany handrail containing a carved newel post. One first-floor front room has corner cupboards with serpentine shelves and shell heads, although these are likely from the 20th century. C20 extensions to rear are not of special interest.
