Description
The Bembridge War Memorial, designed by local architect Percy Goddard Stone and erected in 1920, commemorates those lost in the First World War. Subsequent additions were made after the Second World War, Korean War, and Falklands conflict to include the names of further fallen service personnel.
The memorial is constructed from Hopton Wood limestone for the cross and Portland stone for the base, with a flagstone surround made from local stone. It stands on the grassed area known as 'Swiss Corner', at the junction of the High Street and Church Road. The memorial comprises a tall Latin cross set upon an octagonal plinth, which in turn sits on a three-step octagonal base.
The front face of the plinth is inscribed in relief with the words βIN/ GRATEFUL/ MEMORY/ OF OUR/ GLORIOUS/ DEAD 1914-1919β, followed by the date 1939-1945 below. The names of 46 individuals lost in the First World War, 21 from the Second World War, and one each from Korea and the Falklands are also inscribed in relief on the remaining sides of the plinth, accompanied by their rank and regiment or branch of service.
