Description
The wall surrounding the former bowling green at Knighton Gorges is likely from the 18th century. It is a roughly rectangular structure that once enclosed a bowling green for the mansion of Knighton Gorges, which was a 16th-century building demolished in 1821. The walls to the west, north, and east are made of stone rubble and rise to heights of 6 to 8 feet, with some 18th-century brick quoins at the northeast corner. The southern section is constructed of red brick and features an attached garden building from the late 18th or early 19th century. This building has a vaulted ceiling, a mullioned window on the east side, and a door on the west side, serving as a heated garden wall. The wall is included for its historical significance as a garden feature associated with a notable, though now demolished, island manor house.
