Description
Lower Knighton is a farmhouse that likely dates back to around 1693, with a datestone from 1742 featuring the initials M D, which probably relates to later alterations. The building is constructed of coursed stone rubble with ashlar quoins and has a tiled roof. It features an off-central clustered brick chimneystack and is roughly L-shaped with a lobby entrance. There is a modern extension that incorporates an 18th-century brewhouse. The farmhouse has two storeys and four windows, with four 20th-century casements. The gable ends have stone coping and kneelers, and there is a plinth. The entrance includes an off-central early 19th-century six-panelled door beneath a mid-19th-century gabled weather porch, which has a slate roof, columns, and lattice work. The rear has a catslide roof with an out-shut. The former brewhouse, made of stone with brick dressings, is now part of the house. Inside, there is a half-winder staircase, and the lounge features a wide stone fireplace and a chamfered spine beam with lamb's tongue stops. Originally, the house displayed carved sailing ships from the Napoleonic period, but these were removed during renovations and were displayed at Haseley Manor at the time of resurvey. The initials over the door may refer to Mary Dillington of Knighton Gorges.
