Description
Saxonbury House is a substantial house dating from around 1830, located on West Street, facing across Spencer Road towards the sea. The building is two storeys high and has a cement-rendered exterior. The north front features pilasters on a plinth, with a central canted bay that projects forward, also flanked by pilasters set in a stepped return to the wall. The low-pitched hipped slate roof is concealed by a parapet with coping, which, along with a modillion cornice, breaks forward over the bay.
The façade includes five windows, three of which are in the bay. The first-floor windows are recessed sash windows with later glazing bars, while the ground floor has French windows with architrave surrounds and moulded sills on consoles. A tent-roofed verandah on cast iron columns is present at the ground floor.
On the east entrance front, there are three first-floor windows and two ground-floor windows, all in plain rendered surrounds. The central entrance features a recessed glazed door with a square fanlight, flanked by paired Doric columns and pilasters that support an entablature. To the south, there is a two-storeyed wing with two windows, a hipped slate roof, and an eaves cornice.
