Description

North View House, originally known as old Ryde Farmhouse, dates from the latter part of the 18th century but was enlarged and altered into a villa around 1830 and later. The building is three storeys high and is faced with stucco, with traces of the original house visible in the two-storey stuccoed recessed bays on the east and west sides. The front features pilaster strips, bands between the storeys, and a plinth. It has a low-pitched hipped slate roof with an eaves cornice.

A mid-19th century wooden rectangular bay has been added to the east side, extending through all three storeys and featuring a cornice and blocking course. The front has sash windows, with one light on each side of each floor, and no glazing bars, along with incised panelled aprons. Other windows include two on the first and second floors and one on the ground floor, which are recessed sash windows with intact glazing bars and block sills.

The wooden porch at the front has free-standing square-section Tuscan columns and a pilaster against the wall, with an entablature above. The porch has been glazed on the sides. The recessed door consists of six fielded panels and has a rectangular fanlight with tracery glazing bars and panelled reveals. A flight of six steps leads up to the entrance, which is flanked by capped piers at the bottom.

Adjoining North View House to the west is a cottage, originally part of the farm, now known as No 3 Market Street. North View House, along with Nos 7 to 11 (odd) and No 3 Market Street, forms a group.
