Description

Buddles Butt is a house from the late 18th century that was altered in the early 20th century by Arthur Blomfield. It is constructed of stone rubble faced with rough plaster and has a tiled roof. The building has two storeys and features six windows, including three in a two-storey central curved bay. The windows are mainly 16-pane sashes. An early 20th-century octagonal belvedere is present, supported by four Tuscan columns and two pilasters, topped with a conical roof and an iron weathervane. The ground floor bay includes early 20th-century portholes and a French window. At the rear, there is a two-storey wing that is pebbledashed, has a hipped tiled roof, and features a circular window.

Attached to the house is an 18th-century wall made of coursed rubble with stone coping, which includes three square ashlar piers with moulded cornices and ball finials. Inside, the house contains a fireplace that was removed from Appley Hall in Ryde, featuring a wrought iron firegrate, as well as a large 18th-century wooden fireplace adorned with urns, triglyphs, and ovals. There is also an Art Nouveau fireplace in the central front room, a cellar with wine bins, and an early 19th-century staircase that has scrolled tread ends, two stick balusters for each step, and a mahogany handrail. An early 19th-century print shows this house with a castellated parapet in 1838.
