Description
The Old Sand House is a 18th-century building located in Freshwater, originally known as Harold Hayles Boatbuilders Premises. It was formerly a warehouse and is now used as boatbuilders' premises. The structure is constructed of stone rubble with red brick dressings and features a mainly slate roof, with the lower two courses made of stone slates. The building has an L-shaped plan and gable ends with kneelers, with the north gable topped by a ball finial. The gables include pointed openings that also have red brick dressings, and there is a plinth at the base. It features three pointed arched doorways and some reused masonry. The building was once buttressed and has an angled queen strut roof. Historically, it was used to store sand from Alum Bay before it was shipped to the mainland for glass making. This is the only remaining old industrial building in Yarmouth harbour.
