Description

The Calbourne War Memorial commemorates the fallen of World War I, with later additions for those who died in World War II. Designed by Sir Arthur Clay, it was unveiled in 1920. The memorial stands approximately 3 metres high and is located around 20 metres north-west of All Saints' Church on the village green. It is a Hopton Wood limestone Celtic cross set upon a trapezoidal Portland stone plinth. The plinth incorporates inset panels on its north-west and south-east sides, and sits on a low square base. The north-west face of the cross has raised edging to the shaft, arms and central circular design, while the opposite face is flat. The south-east panel, facing the church, bears the inscription "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND/ IN MEMORY OF/ CALBOURNE MEN WHO DIED FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918," followed by the names, rank, and regiment/service of 14 individuals lost in the conflict. The opposite panel lists two names of those who died in the Second World War, inscribed with the words "ALSO OF THOSE/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE WAR/ 1939-1945." The memorial was funded through public subscription, costing just over £200, and erected by local builders Messrs T and J Ellery. It holds group value with the nearby Grade II* listed All Saints' Church.
