Description
This is a barn located at Bowcombe Farm, dated 1706 on the north gable. The barn features walls made of coursed limestone and greensand rubble, and its roof is now covered with corrugated iron. The structure measures approximately 50 metres long and 8 metres wide. It includes triangular ventilation slots and three cart entrances, with the southeastern entrance added in the 19th century. The central cart entrance has been blocked, as have all entrances at the rear. The barn consists of 12 bays and has an angled queen-post roof supported by many reused timbers, featuring two tiers of purlins, no ridgepiece, and curved tension braces. Nearly half of the original rafters are still intact. The southernmost bay near the central cart entrance has had the tie beam sawn through and an adjoining purlin partially sawn through to accommodate 20th-century agricultural machinery. Additionally, the southernmost truss includes a 19th-century scientific kingpost.
