Description

The Chapel at Bembridge School is a school chapel built between 1931 and 1933 by architects W.A. Harvey and H.G. Wicks, with an extension added in 1961-1962. It is constructed of buff-coloured brick in stretcher bond and features a clay plain tile roof. The chapel has a rectangular nave, with aisle-posts providing the only interruption to the large open space. An additional bay was added at the liturgical east end during the 1961-1962 extension, and a tower was constructed at the liturgical west end, which serves as the entrance and has a gallery above.

The exterior showcases a large roof that extends over low aisle walls, supported by substantial brick buttresses with set-offs between plain three-light windows fitted with leaded panes. The roof is gabled at the liturgical east end and hipped at the opposite end, with integral north and south porches that embrace the slightly battered tower. The tower features a plain parapet set back and mostly replaced plain windows. The porches and the doorway at the base of the tower are adorned with plain round arches. Above the tower doorway is a stone relief of St George and the Dragon, created by Alec Miller in 1949.

Inside, the nave is a single large space that is open to the timber queen-post roof structure, with aisle-posts featuring curved braces to the tie-beams. There is a brick round arch in the tower that leads to a balcony. The pews, resembling choir-stalls, face inward, and the interior includes dado panelling. Many fittings and decorations were created by former members of the school, and there is stained glass by Edward Woore.
