Description

Bembridge Windmill is a tower windmill built around 1700. It is constructed of Isle of Wight stone rubble, with the south side rendered in cement. The windmill has three stages, featuring two cambered stone arched openings at the lowest stage and square stone openings at the top. It has a wooden cogged eaves cornice, a boat-shaped wooden cap, a fantail, and four sweeps.

Inside, the windmill contains an impressive collection of early 18th-century wooden machinery. The bin floor includes the cap and turning gear, the great brake wheel, and windshaft for the sack hoist, as well as the wallower and grain bins. The stone floor features the alarm bell, damsel, runner stone, bed stone, tun, and grain hopper. The machine floor has the bran shuttle, tun, and great spur wheel.

The windmill was sketched by JMW Turner in 1795 and remained in continuous use until 1897, after which it was used only for cattle feed until 1915. In 1962, it was acquired by the National Trust. The steps between the first and second floors bear the inscription 'E Beker 1746 AC', although other inscriptions suggest a possible date of 1701, which is unclear. The mill is likely contemporaneous with the barn associated with the mill house, indicating that the three buildings were probably erected around the same time.
