Description
The Old House, located at No 80 on the east side of High Street, is likely the oldest house in Ryde, dating back to the early 17th century. The building has been significantly altered and enlarged in the first half of the 19th century. Surviving features from the original structure include parts of the half-timbering at the north end, with panelling, the original tie beam, the base of one principal rafter, and a diagonal strut, all with old brick nogging. The gable end has a partly old tile roof with a 19th-century dormer and a cross gable that projects over the entrance, supported by brick piers. The gable also features bargeboards, as do other 19th-century gabled additions on the east and south sides. The windows are 19th-century casements.
