Description
Hill's of Ryde is a building located on the west side of High Street, dating from around the 1840s to 1850s, although the firm was established in 1865. The site features a three-storey corner block at the junction with Newport Street, alongside another three-storey house to the south that has a lower roof line. The facades are made of painted brick, topped with a gable end slate roof. The main block has a stucco cornice and blocking course, with two solid pediments facing High Street and one facing Newport Street. Above the ground floor, the main block is decorated with stucco pilasters, while the curved corner includes a plain stucco panel.
There are six windows on the High Street side and six on Newport Street. The first floor on High Street features four flat-fronted bow windows, each with three lights, glazing bars, pilasters, a frieze, a cornice, and moulded sills. On Newport Street, there is one bay window with three lights and later glazing bars on the first floor. The other windows on the main block are recessed sash windows with later glazing bars and plain stucco surrounds. The adjoining house has recessed sash windows, some of which still retain their original glazing bars. The shop fronts date from the early 20th century.
