Description
Barton Manor is a house located on Whippingham Road, built in 1853 with some earlier origins. An Augustinian Oratory was established on this site in 1272 and was suppressed in 1439. A house was constructed here in the early 17th century, which had largely fallen into ruins by the mid-19th century. The entire estate was purchased by Queen Victoria and the Prince Consort in 1853, and the house was almost completely rebuilt using the old stone in the Jacobean style.
The north-east front of the house is E-shaped, featuring two storeys and attics with five windows. It is constructed of stone rubble with ashlar quoins, stone galleting, and a rubble plinth. The roof is tiled and has clustered brick chimneystacks. There are five gables, each with finials at the apices and angles, as well as two similar gables on the inner face of the projecting wings. In the centre, there is a porch with two storeys above, also gabled, which includes a round-headed archway. The windows are casements with stone mullions. Notably, in the north-west wall of the southernmost projecting wing, there are three blocked lancet windows from the medieval Oratory. The south-west front features three gables and six windows, all arranged in two tiers of two lights with stone mullions and transoms. The interior includes Edwardian panelling.
