Description
South Lodge to Barton Manor, located on Whippingham Road, dates from around 1850 and is part of the reconstruction of the Barton Manor Estate commissioned by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. This lodge is one of a pair of identical structures flanking the drive. It has a T-shaped layout, is one storey high with attics, and is designed in the Neo-Jacobean style. The building is constructed of stone rubble with stone quoins and features chamfered coping on the walls. It has steeply pitched tiled roofs with gables facing the road and a central ridge. The lodge is adorned with grouped Neo-Jacobean red brick chimney stacks. In the gable ends facing the road, there are 2-light attic casements and a 3-light ground floor casement with stone mullions. The inner fronts include 2-light stone mullioned casements and a central projecting stone gabled porch. The Royal Coat of Arms and those of Albert are displayed in stone on the gable ends and on either side at first floor level of the inner fronts. The wings of the lodge are of equal height to the north and south, contributing to its picturesque appearance.
