Description
The Cochrane Building at Osborne House is a former set of lecture rooms located on the Osborne estate in East Cowes. It was constructed in 1905 by Henry Nicholas Hawks from the Office of Works. The building features pebbledash brick with brick buttresses and has applied timber-framing on the gables. The roof is made of clay plain tiles, with gabled ends and overhanging eaves that showcase exposed rafter ends.
The building has a rectangular plan and includes a linking wing to the main structure, which was formerly stables. It is designed in the Domestic Revival style and is a single storey with asymmetrical elevations. The projecting gable ends have bargeboards, applied timber-framing, and battered brick buttresses. Smaller gables sit above large multi-pane sash windows, which are currently boarded over, and the doorways are topped with canopies supported by curved braces. Atop the building are two polygonal cupolas, each featuring small columns that support lead-clad domes with finials.
Inside, the building contains a series of lecture rooms with exposed roof truss braces and linking corridors. The Cochrane Building was originally built as lecture rooms for the Royal Naval Hospital, which was established in 1903-1904 in the converted stables from 1859-1860 at Osborne House. The Naval College was closed in 1921.
