Description
North Lodge to Barton Manor, located on Whippingham Road, dates from around 1850 and is part of the reconstruction of the Barton Manor Estate commissioned by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. This lodge is one of a pair of identical structures flanking the drive and is designed in a T-shape. It is a single storey with attics, built in a Neo-Jacobean style using stone rubble with stone quoins and chamfered coping on the walls. The lodge features steeply pitched tiled roofs with gable ends facing the road and a central ridge. There are grouped Neo-Jacobean red brick chimney stacks in the gable ends, which also include 2-light attic casements and a 3-light ground floor casement with stone mullions. The inner fronts have 2-light stone mullioned casements and a central projecting stone gabled porch. The Royal Coat of Arms and those of Prince Albert are displayed in stone on the gable ends and on either side at first floor level of the inner fronts. The wings are of the same height to the north and south, contributing to the picturesque appearance of the lodge.
