Description
Freemasons Tavern is an early 19th-century public house located at the corner of St James's Street and Lugley Street. The building is three storeys high, constructed of painted brick, and features a low-pitched gable end slate roof with a wooden eaves cornice. A brick band runs between the storeys, and there is a plinth at the base.
The front facing St James's Street has three sash windows with intact glazing bars on the second floor, framed by moulded flush wood frames and thin block sills. The mid-19th-century public house front includes Doric pilasters with incised panels, a frieze, and a cornice, along with an angled door. The Lugley Street side has two recessed sash windows with glazing bars and block sills. There is a bay window on the first floor with three lights, also featuring glazing bars, a plain strips frieze, a cornice, and a deep apron. Additionally, there is a small round-headed window.
On the ground floor at the corner, there is a large window with three round-headed lights flanked by Doric pilasters. The recessed door consists of four fielded panels, two of which are glazed, and is set within a doorcase of thin panelled pilasters topped with a bracketed cornice hood.
