Description

This is a house built in 1905, designed by J L Ball of Southsea for Colonel S Wishart, in the Queen Anne style. It is an asymmetrical building with cement rendering and a tiled roof, notable for its tall chimneystacks with arched recesses. The house is two storeys high with attics.

The front elevation features a hipped projection to the left of the two central bays. The first floor has eight sash windows with glazing bars, including one tripartite window, with jalousies present. The ground floor has glazing bars to the windows in the projection, but other ground floor windows lack glazing bars. The doorcase has a rusticated surround. Three hipped dormers are present, each with a triple window, decorative leaded cheeks, and metal finials.

The right side elevation has a curved bay window to the ground floor, and a cast iron verandah which has been glazed in. A dormer with a Venetian window is also present.

The rear (garden) elevation has ten windows; two are in a square projection on both floors, one is in a two-storey flat-roofed bathroom and pantry extension, and the remaining windows are contained within a projecting canted bay through two floors. First floor windows have glazing bars; ground floor windows primarily lack them. Two triple dormers, matching those on the front, are also present.

Inside, the entrance hall is panelled and features Tuscan columns. The ground floor Drawing Room has a plastered ceiling with a coved cornice and a fireplace with engaged Ionic columns and a marble surround. Another ground floor room has a stone bolection moulded fireplace. The main staircase has stick balusters, a ramped handrail, and segmental arches to the upper floor.
