Description

All Saints Vicarage, built in 1883 and designed by J.L. Rearson for the Reverend Thomas Peacey, is now divided into two dwellings. The building is constructed of red brick with stone dressings, and has hipped clay tile roofs with decorative ridge tiles to the entrance range, together with brick stacks. It is designed in a late 15th-early 16th century style. The building has an L-shaped layout, with the main entrance on the short east front. This front has two storeys plus an attic, and an irregular arrangement of windows. The upper floor features trefoil-headed openings to the mullion and transom windows, with round arch heads over the ground floor windows. Lead lights and stained glass remain in some windows. A gabled dormer with a three-light divided tracery window is visible in the entrance bay, and there is a parapet with a moulded string continuing around the full-height, seven-light canted bay window to the right. A large, square-headed three-light divided tracery window is located at the staircase, with a two-light window with a hoodmould above in the entrance bay. A moulded arch-head opening leads to a recessed, plank and studded door, approached by a shallow flight of steps. A wall to the left of the entrance is unlit, but features a projecting gabled six-light bay on the left return. The garden front includes a 20th-century metal window to a possibly late 19th-century rebuilt gabled dormer, and a stone oriel window in a gabled end bay on the left. Lower lights in some windows have had their leading removed. Two gables are visible at the re-entrant angle, and there is a long south front to the service wing. The extensive internal accommodation reflects the fact that the Reverend Peacey had eleven children. The vicarage showcases Perpendicular detailing by the architect of All Saints church, and is considered one of his finest works.
