Description
This is a row of four early 19th-century terraced houses at numbers 9 to 12 Charles Street, Brighton. Numbers 9 and 12 have facades of stucco scored to resemble ashlar, with plain stucco used to face the bay spandrels. Number 10 is built of painted brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with 20th-century fish scale tiles to the bay spandrels. Number 11 is also of painted brick in Flemish bond, but with mathematical tiles to the bay spandrels. The roofs are slate, with the slate on number 10 being ‘turnerised’, and number 11 having a tile roof.
The houses are three storeys high with a basement, and each has one window. While the external materials differ between the properties, the overall design is consistent. Each house features a flat-arched entrance with an overlight, framed by fluted Tuscan pilasters. Console brackets supporting a modillioned cornice form the porch. All entrances are set to the right party wall, although number 9’s entrance is set to the left. Each house has a six-panelled door, with the jambs and soffits of numbers 11 and 12 being panelled. To the side of the entrance rises a full-height segmental bay with a flat-arched, tripartite sash window; the original sashes are 6 x 6 panes to the centre and 4 x 4 panes to the sides. The second-floor windows are shorter than those on the lower floors. Basement windows have some original sashes, except for number 11. Above the bay is a single flat-arched dormer. Stacks are located on the party walls. The interiors were not inspected.
