Description

This is a First World War memorial, erected between 1918 and 1926. It is constructed from polished pink granite and stands in the northwest corner of the former St Aubyns School playing fields, close to the sports pavilion. The memorial comprises a freestanding Calvary cross. A simple, finely carved Celtic cross is supported by a tapering, rectangular shaft set on a square, three-tier base, which stands on an unpolished stone plinth. The inscription "IN LOVING MEMORY OF/ BRAVE ST AUBYN’S BOYS WHO/ GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918" is inscribed on the front face of the top step of the base. The names of those who died are inscribed on the front faces of the lower steps.
