Description
This building, known as Nos. 68-72 and 71A on Western Road in Hove, is a row of shops dating from around 1865, with some minor alterations made in the 20th century. The structure features stucco over brick with quoins. It consists of six shops that form the enlarged ground floor of the north-east return of No. 17 Palmeira Square. Architectural details include fluted pilasters with capitals made of clustered brackets, an entablature with semi-circular acroteria that have an acanthus leaf design above the brackets, and remnants of cast iron cresting at the eastern end. The bracket capitals separate the fascia of the shops, which have a plinth and dado below. The shopfronts have recessed openings with glazed doors for the single-fronted shops, most of which include display windows set in reveals. For details about the upper storeys, refer to Nos. 1-17 Palmeira Square.
